Nerd bit…Tech Warning?
Different economic areas have different rules for product safety, they are called Technical Barriers to Trade.
With respect to product safety, the economic area will have established rules in law setting out the actual requirements for product safety in their area. For example, the rules for the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland are detailed in the United Kingdom Laws called Regulations. The consumer protection act refers to them as Product Safety Regulations.
The European Union lays out their requirements in European Regulations and Directives. European Regulations are to be adopted by all member states without exception, whereas only the appropriate sections of the Directives would be given effect by other legislation. In the UK the EU Low Voltage Directive 2014 was given effect by The Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations 2016.
